On A Quilting Roll (Finally)

I finally seemed to have regained my quilting mojo (useful as another FNSI is approaching) and have made great progress with the third baby quilt in surprisingly little time.

I got all the borders sewn on, the back pieced, basted the layers after a major battle with the fabrics and commenced quilting.

I'd decided that quilting each side of the joins would be most forgiving to my wonky piecing and originally meant the stitching to be very close to the seams. But due to some sloppy stitching I've ended up quilting quite a distance from the seams. But I'm actually pretty pleased with the effect.

Well you can just about make out the white quilting, only in one direction so far.  The top looks good, unfortunately the back has kept up the fight it started during the basting and there are a few puckers I've managed to sew in.

 

I also intend to do some stitch in ditch and stippling on this quilt and I have the perfect excuse  - the Friday Night Sew In on 19th Aug.  Click the purple text to sign up too (I've bottled posting the button this month).  Looking forward to seeing everyone's achievments from the evening.

And the zig zag jungle quilt is complete (bar some last minute tidying)...

And the baby it's for is still less than a month old!

I think I've finally got the hang of the corners on the binding too.

More Holidays!

So another weekend has gone by and I have yet again achieved zero crafting (even with carrying knitting round in my handbag all weekend!).
Instead I have had a wonderful and very busy two days in York with members of my family.

After an overnight coach journey and a stint of window shopping (not due to lack of cash just because the window displays are so lovely) we started our tourist extravaganza with a visit to an archaelogical dig in Hunsgate.

Its coming towards the end of the dig but we could see Victorian drains and wells, Viking store houses and Roman graves - and this was considered an empty bit of York.

Next was what was possibly the highlight of the trip for me - the Quilt Museum curated by the UK Quilter's Guild (which I have decided to join).  Unfortunately we were not allowed to take any photos but for a small museum (in one of York's many 16thC ish guildhouses) there was plenty to see  - wedding dresses covered in trapunto, celebratory quilts from the 1800s onwards, stunning modern quilts and some mono mini quilts.  If you want a peek click here - Quilt Museum - I will definitely be paying another visit when next in York.  This was followed by sitting and watching the world go by in the sun and then a very pleasant meal in what I think may be my favourite restaurant -Cafe Concerto.

Whilst waiting for the others to arrive on Saturday morning I couldn't resist photographing some of the Minster's gargoyles...

Unfortunately it was quite a gloomy day.  So the mostly indoor National Railway Museum was a welcome place to visit.  It's an absolutely massive place with a wide range of, obviously, train related exhibits and a really little tank engine giving rides.

A really good weekend with a trip to a craft shop snuck in, although even with two cameras at my disposal I seem to have taken next to no photos.  Even though we were busy the whole time there is still plenty that I haven't yet seen in York so I predict another visit in the near future.

As well as some serious (and late) Spring cleaning I have another enjoyable trip planned for next weekend - hopefully accompanied with lots of photos!

Unexpectedly Green Fingers

I enjoy having a plant or two around the house, usually one I've managed to pick up cheaply as I seem to have an ability to kill them easily.


For a change I thought I'd try growing a chilli pepper plant as I have a warm and relatively sunny room for it to live in and so one got lugged back from town in my tote bag and dumped in a mug on my window sill.


It quickly became apparent that it needed repotting, even though flowering happily, so a trip in the car to a friend's house to get necessary supplies saw it repotted and in a tiny bucket on my window sill. What has surprised me after my somewhat neglectful care (and several trips in the car to be plant sat whilst I was on holiday) is that not only has the plant grown and still got all its leaves, but it is also flowering away merrily and producing several chillies.

Unfortunately I have finally got round to reading the care label you can see in the phot which advises a 10 inch diameter pot for this plant at initial repotting (I though you had to increase pot size gradually but not in this case it seems). So another trip in the car is planned for the plant to get it more soil and a significantly larger pot. Fingers crossed its still doing as well after the journey.

Now all I have to do is to figure out how to tell when the chillies are ready!

Slowly Does It

(Thanks to issues with Blogger I am about a week behind with my posts)


Contrary to the evidence on my blog I am still alive and crafting, although I do seem to have slowed down somewhat lately.

However I am still making steady progress with the two baby quilts which are gifts for July babies (so I really need to speed up again!). I have the top and back sorted for my jungle zig zag one and it's just (!) a case of quilting and binding. Willl hopefully have a close to finished version to show this weekend. And as for the rainbow one...

Although a slightly mis-orientated photo (going to let Blogger win that battle) I am really pleased with how its going. Just another two stripy borders with white corners to go. Luckily they're already all sewn together. And then some serious thinking about how to quilt it. Was considering stippling with rainbow thread in the white borders and something straight line in the centre, though stitch in ditch is out as close up the points nd seams don't meet.

I haven't just been sitting round being uncrafty during the last few weeks, I have become heavily absorbed in a shawl which I'm knitting as a present for the end of the year, and therefore will not make an appearance on the blog for a few more months.

Summer Hols - Part 2

As with all good camping holidays the rain eventually tracked us down.  We spent the last full day of our holiday in Torquay and visited the nearby, rather large, miniature village.

And then the weather got even wetter and a, luckily dry, night was spent in the trusty tent listening to the weather and desperately hoping to avoid a toilet trip whilst it was pouring it down.


The day of the drive home dawned bright and sunny - typically - and so a very pleasant morning was spent in Dartmouth doing some serious damage to my bank account purchasing a print of the area.

A day at home was had to recover and then off to London for some serious culture.  First stop Anne Boleyn at Shakespeare's globe followed by a walk along the river.  

And then, in the evening, off to Charing Cross Road area for Much Ado About Nothing with David Tennant and Catherine Tate.  Both plays were brilliant and David Tennant made an excellent Benedick.  Unfortunately, possibly due to my dithering, we did not manage to get any autographs, but I did just about get a photo of David Tennant amongst the autograph hunters.

And considering all we packed in I actually felt really refreshed by the end of the week.

Summer Hols - Part One

Had a week off work last week and instead of spending it crafting (which considering my UFOs may have been a good and cheap option) I went on a short camping trip in Devon with my sister.


First holiday excitements were getting all the necessary camping gear into my mini and then managing to put up the tent without any 'incidents' between me and my sister.

Although a very serviceable tent (as proven during a rainstorm) we decided to spend the first evening in the nearby picturesque town of Dartmouth.

where we quickly learnt two things:


1. Not many restaurants in this tourist haven open on a Monday and those that do don't open before 7pm.


2. There are still many places that don't accept card payments.


Once we'd got over those lessons we had a very tasty and large meal in a pleasant restaurant.


Next day was spent doing damage to our spending money in a craft centre in a large hall in the quaint village of Cockington, which also served huge Devon cream teas (large portions seem to be a Devonian trait!).  And then off to the hippyish town of Totnes for the afternoon.  By this time the English summer had arrived and we were treated to a grey drizzly afternoon so unfortunately no pictures to share.

Successful Weekend

Well as well as relaxing and moving my lounge furniture around I got a pleasing amount of sewing done.  I was hoping to have sewn the pinwheels together by Sunday evening but I got a little distracted by the tv and had a few layout dilemmas!  When I started trying to sew the pinwheels together I realised I was getting a little  dozy.


Anyway the layout I'm going with (as I have already sewn together 5 pinwheels) is...

It's based strongly on a free pattern from the Fat Quarter shop.  It's destined to be a baby quilt for the baby of a close friend who has always appreciated bright colours.  Two borders to go and then I'm going to risk some free motion quilting I think.

Beautiful Things

So a rather nice shop is having a sale and I rather liked two of the lamps in the sale.  Some how they seemed to have both come home with me.  Please do not ask how much!

This is the one that originally caught my eye and my reason for going into the shop in the first place.

And then this one just called out to me.  The birds are in gold.  And yes I know the shade is still wrapped in plastic I'm still deciding whether it is the right size for the base, the one in the shop was even smaller.  Think I'm totally happy with the colour and style of the shade though.


A little confession I don't actually have places to put these lamps but I have been rearranging my lounge all day in order to solve this problem, it'd be a shame to hide them away on top of tall bookcases.

FNSI Results

Well my Friday Night Sew In was more of a Friday night prep in.

At least this pile of squares is now all ready to be converted into HSTs and eventually pin wheels.  Don't seem   to do much machine sewing during the FNSIs, but I don't want to annoy the neighbours with my sewing machine during the late evening.

My other Friday evening treat was finding this...

A very productive alpine strawberry plant with almost perfectly ripe tiny strawberries which have thrived in a shady condition and taste yummy.  And the best bit ... I appear to have got to them before the birds!

Pretty knitty and FNSI

Normal crafting is definitely resumed now.  Been trying to revise and therefore have done next to no craft over the last few weeks, I haven't even been managing to keep up with the blogs.


Anyway just wanted to share my gorgeous dpns and lace yarn with you all...

The dpns are knitpicks wooden ones, no sure they're quite pointy enough for lace knitting but they're pretty and are doing the job.

And this somewhat dark picture (should really take pictures earlier in the day) is the lovely blue tonal yarn that for the life of me I can't remember the details for.


I'm sorry I can't show you a better picture of the actual knitting but it's destined to be a present, hopefully this year!


And just for those who have been in a blog free world like me for the past few days the next FNSI is 17 June and signs ups are on Crafty Vegas Mom's blog. This coincides beautifully with my planned weekend of crafting.  Two baby quilts required by July and I'd like to finally finish my quilt and I could do with squeezing in a bit of knitting!

Baby Quilt 2

Just a quick update on the jungle HSTs that appeared a while back.

They've now been combined to make the top for another zig zag baby quilt.

Very much a work in progress type picture.  I really like how this one is working out.  And I now have, hopefully, the right fabric for the back and binding.  I foresee a quilting and binding session in my future!

Strawberries and white!

More exciting news from my garden...on my regular inspection of the strawberry plants I've found baby strawberries

Or at least I found them on one plant, the other has decided its mission in life is to grow leaves.  Hopefully I'll
get to at least see some red strawberries.  The birds round here are keen on berries.
